The Impact: According to the latest statistics released by the CDC, 1 in every 68 American children are diagnosed with autism. A child is diagnosed with autism every 15 minutes. The majority of these children will require support throughout their lifetime. Raising a child with autism is very expensive and is overwhelming for most families. According to a study released in 2006, it can cost about $3.2 million to take care of an autistic person over his or her lifetime (Understanding Autism: From Basic Neuroscience to Treatment). After all of the expenses required to care for a child with autism, it’s almost impossible for a family to afford a vacation.
