When it comes to being an entrepreneur, making mistakes is apart of the job. I believe its okay to make mistakes when you can’t avoid them, but when you know better you should do better. Today I would like to talk about a few mistakes that I would like you to avoid.

Mistake #1
Don’t spend all your time focusing on the fun stuff. I like thinking of company names and designing logos as much as the next guy, but remember that is not the first thing you need to focus on when starting a business. Your first objective is not to throw up a website. The first things you need to do are figure out your passion, work on your products, do your research, and create a plan. If you come across a great website name, go ahead and buy the domain name, but don’t build it. Park it until you’ve figured out the more important things first.

Mistake #2
Don’t rush. I know you want the big business and a long line of customers right now, but that’s not how it’s going to work. It takes the average startup a few years to make decent money. You might be the exception to that rule, but don’t be discouraged if you are not. You are starting a small business, not a big business, so remember to take baby steps.

Mistake #3
Don’t start your business for riches or fame. As I previously stated, startups take time to grow. If you are trying to get money fast or hoping to build a business out of financial desperation, you are starting a business for the wrong reasons. When you put fast profit over tapping into a personal passion, you are decreasing your chances of success. Remember not to start your business for the wrong reasons.

Mistake #4
Don’t start your business at the wrong time. There is no such thing as the perfect day to start a business, but it is possible to start a business at the wrong time. As I mentioned above, it is not a good time to start your business if you are desperate to find a quick or easy solution to financial freedom. If you start your business as a part-time side hustle to gain extra cash that’s fine. If you are in a position to dedicate time and/or money into your business venture to gradually make it grow, that is great. However, if you attempt to start a business when you have bill collectors on the brain, you will find it hard to focus. It’s hard to chase your dreams when you’re chasing money. Before you start your business, be sure to get your priorities in order.

Mistake #5
Don’t get into the habit of chasing money or shiny objects either. Don’t start a business because someone pitched you an idea that sounds good. Don’t invest in a business because you think it’s an easy turnkey operation or an easy solution to getting money fast. If you wouldn’t buy it, don’t try to sell it to others. More importantly, if you can’t sell it, why try and start it? Creating a successful business is more than tapping into your passion or even finding a great franchise. In order for you to turn that passion into profit, you have to commit your time and money into learning about sales and marketing. Starting a business isn’t just about creating something new. It is also about learning new things along the way.
